Doberman Pinscher

Wink is a youngster that came from an animal shelter in northern California.  It appears that his eye was at some point removed but without any history, we'll never know why.  Even one-eyed, Wink gets around just fine is a lively guy who loves to play and will insist on playing with the other dogs he meets.  Wink was adopted and his owner LOVES him but it just isn't working out with her other dog who doesn't like him at all. So Wink needs a new home and we will try to find a better match for her other doggie. The good news is that she has put a lot of work into Wink so he is an even better dog now and ready for another shot! This is what she had to say about him:
"Wink is one of the most friendly, playful dogs I've ever met. He's incredibly dog friendly and absolutely loves anyone he sees. I've yet to see him meet anyone he doesn't like, dogs people cats and parrot included. He did well with my tiny Chihuahua and doesn't bother my parrot. I have little three foot baby gates set up and he doesn't jump them. He has a lot of energy and loves to run so he would do best in an active home and ideally with a family with a large backyard. He's great with kids but I wouldn't recommend him to a family with small children just because he gets so excited he could accidentally knock them over. When he came to me he was very strong on the leash, he is now very well behaved on the leash and can be walked without a choke chain and he walks perfectly. He has spent a week going to work with me and was a complete gentlemen. He knows "go lay down" and you point to where you want him and he will go lay down and stay there until you tell him he can get up. I do this when I get home for the first few minutes so he doesn't get too excited. He loves the dog park and is able to get just about any dog to play with him. He absolutely loves balls and his toys, he carries them around constantly. If you tell him to "drop it" he will and sit patiently and wait for you to throw it. This took some training, but he has it down now. He will play fetch for hours if you let him, and loves every second of it but he can't catch the ball for the life of him. He loves to rip up toys but he has NEVER tried to take a shoe, or a sock or anything he's not suppose to and I leave him home alone inside my condo. When I first got him he barked a bit when I would leave so I put a bark collar on him for a few days and he has yet to bark since. He is 95% potty trained, the only time he may have an accident is when you come home and he gets super excited. The way to avoid this is to tell him to go to his place for a few minutes so he can calm down a bit. He takes treats out of your hand so gently it's hard to believe it's even a dog taking the treat. You can also place a treat in front of him and tell him to leave it and 90% of the time he will, we're still working on this. He has gone with me to my friend's house with cats and although he is interested in them he doesn't bother them our try to chase or hurt them. If you tell him to leave it he completely ignores the cats. He has zero food aggression and will let you take food straight out of his mouth and lets other dogs eat out of his bowl while he's eating. My dog won't share food with him but my friend's dogs have. He's the first Dobie I've ever known who likes water, and it's super cute. If you leave your shower door open while you shower he pokes his head in and tries to bite the streams of water. He's amazing at baths, you just tell him to go in the shower and he will and stands perfectly for you while you bathe him. He also LOVES the beach and going to the lake, if you throw his ball in the water he will go in after it. I haven't been letting him sleep on the bed with me because he gets so incredibly excited when he gets on the bed he just can't calm down. He sleeps beside my bed and when I tell him to go to bed he will stay there all night. When you get up and tell him good morning he will get up and he's the perfect height for his nose to come greet you on the pillow without getting on the bed. He gets so excited to tell you good morning his entire butt wiggles. He's great in the car and loads and unloads like a charm. When I first got him he tried to get in the front seat while I was driving and would jump out the second I opened the back door. He now stays in the back seat, 99% of the time, and sits and waits in the back seat until I say OK before he jumps out. He really is an amazing dog and would be perfect for a family with teenage children and a big backyard. You notice I haven't mentioned his missing eye yet, that's because it doesn't impact him in the slightest I suppose other than not being very good at catching the ball. He's not a dog with a missing eye, he's an amazing confident exuberant incredibly smart dog with one eye. If it weren't for my dog I already have not liking him I would love to keep him. He really is a great dog."

He will be back at the rescue on Saturday but we hope he won't be back long. Contact us at dobierescue@earthlink.net or 805-524-5102 if you have any questions.
