Axel is just over a year old as of fall, 2024. He was one of five Dobermans at his animal shelter, all needing rescue the day we visited. We had space for two of them, so Axel was lucky because of his age, dog-socialness, and the sad, insecure, defeated way he appeared to us. We suspect Axel was dumped by his owner because we can't imagine a dog needing to feel secure as much as he does, intentionally running away from whatever security he knew. We have been working with him and an excellent trainer to build his confidence, and now his only real resistance is getting into a vehicle, which reinforces our thinking that this was the last thing he knew before being abandoned. Though Axel is still underweight at about 55 pounds, he's gaining weight and should reach an ideal weight in the mid- to upper-60's.
